Immediately to the north of the central service district is the old warehouse district, increasingly the focus of shopping, clubs and residential development; as in other western cities of North America, the periphery includes going shopping malls and huge box shops. In 1912, the Regina Cyclone damaged much of the town; in the 1930s, the Regina Riot brought more attention and, in the middle of the 1930s drought and Excellent Anxiety, which struck the Canadian Grassy fields especially hard with their financial focus on dry land grain farming.
In recent years, Saskatchewan's farming and mineral resources have entered new need, and it has entered a brand-new period of strong financial growth. History [modify] Early history (18821945) [modify] Regina was developed as the territorial seat of federal government in 1882 when Edgar Dewdney, the lieutenant-governor of the North-West Territories, demanded the site over the much better established Battleford, Troy and Fort Qu'Appelle (the latter some 48 km (30 mi) to the east, one on rolling plains and the other in the Qu'Appelle Valley in between two lakes).
These places had adequate access to water and lived on treed rolling parklands. "Pile-of-Bones", as the site for Regina was then called (or, in Cree, Oskana k-asastki), was by contrast situated in arid and featureless meadow. Solution Can Be Seen Here -Governor Dewdney had actually acquired land surrounding to the path of the future CPR line at Pile-of-Bones, which was differentiated only by collections of bison bones near a small spring run-off creek, some few kilometres downstream from its origin in the middle of what are now wheat fields.
But till 1897, when responsible government was accomplished in the Territories, the lieutenant-governor and council governed by fiat and there was little legitimate means of challenging such choices outside the federal capital of Ottawa. There, the Territories were remote and of little issue. Princess Louise, Duchess of Argyll, other half of the then Guv General of Canada, called the brand-new neighborhood Regina, in honour of her mother, Queen Victoria.
